Modern Foreign Languages

At St Gilbert’s RC Primary our chosen modern foreign language is French. Every year group in Key Stage 2 has a half an hour French lesson each week (with Year 2 building up to this). During these lessons, children have the opportunity to develop their French language skills as well as learn about French culture and traditions.

We also use daily incidental French so that throughout the day children hear and use French around the school. Registers are often taken and basic classroom instructions are given in French. Children are encouraged to practise their French conversations with other children and adults around school.

We follow a teaching and learning scheme of work called 'Salut' which contains word, sentence and text-based teaching opportunities using a variety of methods such as games, songs and stories. As well as being great fun, all the resources have been carefully crafted to help improve pupils' vocabulary, reading, listening and comprehension skills.
