Week 3 (Marie Maynard Daly)

Today you will learn about another famous female scientist: she is called Marie Maynard Daly and is from USA. She studied chemistry at school and went on to conduct scientific research into the effects of food on the body.

You will need to remember some of the knowledge from the circulatory and digestive system to help you understand the work that Marie Maynard did.

You will learn about cholesterol, which I have just had tested at my GP surgery this week! I need to eat a bit more food with good cholesterol and a bit less with bad cholesterol. What would you advise?

Read the Powerpoint presentation below and have a go at the questions about food groups; then the high or low activity sheet; then the Diet and Heart Activity sheet, which will help you with your advice to me I need (see above)!

Those people that have been in class with me - you could use today as an opportunity to make the butter from a pot of double cream! Shake the pot of double cream until you hear a ball of something rattling around inside - keep shaking - keep shaking - until it sounds like a ball is rattling around in some water. Inside you will have a ball of butter surrounded by some buttermilk. Pour away the buttermilk or taste it! Then keep the butter for your toast!!

Happy learning!

Mr Martin
