Fun in the Summer Term……

We have been extremely busy this term, here is a snapshot of some of the things we have been doing:

  • planting seeds for the Kings Coronation
  • getting our own lunch in the dining hall in preparation for reception
  • learning all about Jaspers Beanstalk- building our own beanstalks and measuring them
  • number recognition and subititising
  • making models that move using Mobilo
  • sports day
  • a visit from Miss Beddows and her new baby

The King’s Coronation Celebrations.

Wow, what a busy day packed with lots of fun filled activities. Firstly the children looked amazing in their red, blue and white clothes….we even had a queen and an amazing kings crown.

Our day began around the flag pole with the whole school to learn some fun facts about King Charles lll. Then we went back to class and made our own royal crowns, Union Jack flags and king and queen masks. We had lunch in the hall that was decorated in bunting and then in the afternoon we managed to have our picnic in the sun just before the downpour of rain.

St Joseph’s Penny

Thank you for all the coins that you donated, before they were all collected and counted, the children used them to make some of the sounds that they have been learning.

Easter Fun!

The children had a wonderful time hunting around the outdoor area for Easter eggs and had lots of chocolatey fun making Easter nests.

World Book Day

The children looked absolutely amazing in their costumes, thanks for all your hard work in getting them ready. We started off the day taking part in a procession in the hall with the rest of the school. We got to see everyone else’s costumes which was great. The children then played with puppets from familiar stories and used them to retell parts that they knew. We had some children take part in the reading competition, we had a few shy ones but they tried really hard to talk about the book that they had brought in. A fun day was had by all!

Lunar New Year Celebrations

The children looked absolutely amazing in their animal costumes and red clothes. We had an amazing time celebrating this festival and the children enjoyed participating in many different activities including animal races, making Chinese food, food tasting, making lanterns, dancing dragons and learning about why this festival is celebrated. We hope they have told you all about it.....

Dough Disco!

Most days in colour groups, the children enjoy participating in dough disco. This is an activity which supports fine motor skills and hand movements using play dough and the children absolutely love it.

Making Biscuits

Mrs Moseley made dinosaur biscuits with the children. They helped every step of the way with mixing ingredients, rolling the dough, cutting out the biscuits and decorating them. Yum yum!

Let It Snow, Let It Snow…….

We were so excited to see the snowfall yesterday, we warmed our wellies up in the classroom and then got all wrapped up and went and had great fun in the snow. We made footprints, shovelled the snow, rolled snowballs and explored the snow covered willow pod on the field…..Lydia said “ It’s like Santa’s Workshop!”

Wintery Walks and Measuring Potions!

We have braved the cold this week, put on our wellies, wrapped up warm and stomped and crunched our way around the frosty field. The children spotted mole holes, frosty twigs and liked to crunch the crispy leaves under their feet.
We have also been learning about capacity and have been using the words ‘full, half full, nearly full, nearly empty and empty’. We explored this further by making potions which the children absolutely loved!

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas……..

Christmas crafts have been in full swing this week! The children have been learning about the importance of Advent and have made their own Advent wreaths. They have made glittery stars to guide the shepherds and the kings to baby Jesus and decorated Christmas trees galore. They also really enjoyed practising their counting skills by competing against each other in a race to Bethlehem to see baby Jesus, followed by number recognition using number lines and magnetic numbers. There is also a Bethlehem role play area in our classroom where the children have enjoyed taking on the roles of Mary, Joseph, angels, kings and even the donkey.

Road Safety

Continuing with our topic ‘People Who Help Us’, we have been learning about the very important role of a lollipop person. We have been learning how they help us to cross the road safely and we re-enacted this outside using our ride on cars, the road track and a huge lollipop! The children also made their own lollipops. I hope they have managed to remember some of the important things they have learnt.

Sounds

Over the past couple of weeks we have began phonics and the children have been travelling around the school listening to different sounds that they can hear in the environment. They made some good listening ears to help! The children have experimented with making different sounds using beaters and have also played several games such as ‘Guess the Sound’ and ‘What sound is in Mrs Bolton’s box?’. They have shared sounds that they like and those they dislike too.

Remembrance Day

The children celebrated this special day by making their own fingerprint poppy necklace to wear. We talked about remembering the soldiers who have died and we took part in the flagpole ceremony with the rest of the school.

People Who Help Us.

Our new topic is people who help us. We will be learning about the jobs of people in our community who work to look after us and keep us healthy and safe. This week the children have enjoyed dressing up and taking on the roles of doctors, nurses, firefighters and police officers. They have made fire engines and practised their cutting out skills using scissors. We have also been talking about bonfire night and the children have enjoyed several firework crafts…..some of which were still a bit too wet to bring home!

Pray, Stay and Play

What a fabulous first half term at St. Gilbert’s!

This week we welcomed the parents into Nursery.  We enjoyed our parents taking part in our craft activities and showing them around our nursery.   We were all busy making bedtime prayers, beaded crosses and our families out of lolly pop sticks.  We all had lots

To end the session, we sang the song ‘My God Is A Great Big God’.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?

This week we have read the classic Eric Carle book ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See.’

We have been on a colour hunt around the school.  We have been trying to match to find all the colours from the book.
Can you find the colours at home?

Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See.

The Selfish Crocodile

This week in Nursery we have read the story ‘The Selfish Crocodile’.
We have been learning how to keep our teeth clean and healthy.   We have looked at foods which are good for us and which foods are for treats.  We have enjoyed cleaning some crocodile teeth!

The Tiger Who Came to Tea

This week we have continued to read the book and the children have sequenced parts of the story as a sticking activity. Using the interactive whiteboard we have made tiger prints and encouraged children to notice the repetition of the colours. In maths, we have used a tiger to recognise numbers 1-5 and place them into order. They have begun to make tiger masks by painting paper plates, we will continue with these next week.  The children have also enjoyed making sandwiches just like the ones that the tiger ate at Sophie’s house in the story.

Our topic this half term is Elmer and The Colourful Jungle. Each week we will focus on a different text relating to jungle animals. We have begun to read The Tiger Who Came to Tea, so far the children have enjoyed their own tea party with the tiger, making tigers using play dough, various tiger crafts and story sequencing. We have also learnt that a tiger is part of the big cat family.

Welcome to Nursery’s class page. Each week we will upload photos that will give you an insight into all the new and exciting things that the children have been learning. Here are some from their first few weeks, we hope you enjoy looking at them!
