Welcome to Year 5
Our Mission
Inspired by the example of St Gilbert, we rememeber that we are all part of God's family. Together, we are growing strong in love and faith becoming the best we can be. In Year 5 we endeavour to live out the Gospel values of resilience, faith, compassion courage forgiveness and fullness of life. We encourage to follow Jesus' example by showing kindness, making good choices, caring for others and using our gifts to make a positive difference in our school and wider community.
Living our Faith
Faith is at the heart of everything we do in Year 5. We have regular opportunites for prayer, reflection and worship, giving us time to listen to God, celebrate his love and think about how we can live the gospel in our daily lives. We are encouraged to show resilience when things are challenging, have the courage to try new things, forgive others as Jesus teaches us, and show compassion to those around us. We celebrate each child as a unique and precious member of God's family and encourage all to flourish and experience the fullness of life.
Serving Others
As Year 5 pupils, we growing in responsibility and learning that faith is not only something we believe but something we live out through our actions. Children have the opportunity to take on important roles within our school community including being part of the Gift Team and becoming involved in Mini Vinnies. Through these opportunities, we learn about service, generosity, social justice and caring for those in need. We aim to follow the words of Jesus by putting our faith into action:"Love one another as I have loved you"- John 13:34. Together, we pray, learn,serve and grow as members of God's family.

PE this term is Lacrosse. Y5 are learning new skills and find it thoroughly enjoyable 😁
The Harvest Challenge
Anti-bullying week - the theme is Power for Good. We started the week with Odd Socks Day to celebrate what makes us unique.
Y5 children dressed up in the career they aspired to be in the future. We did this for Money Talk week.We have astrophysicists, scientists, YouTube bloggers , nail technicians, teachers, footballers, hairdressers, vets and surgeons, architects, musician and estate agents. Well done everyone 🙂
For money week Mr Bridge came into school to talk to Y5 about his job and what skills you would need to be a firefighter. We also had Mr Walton who talked to us about his job working with adults to help design Nursery schools.
Our Nordic Cross Stitching
Y5 are enjoying learning skills for Netball. They are learning how to attack, defend, play as a team, shoot and the rules of the game.
European Languages day. Y5 celebrating with Madame.
Design Technologyin Y5 is learning how to do cross stitching and for the children to create their own nordic design following their own pattern
Science investigation about air resistance. We measured three different sizes of squared parachute and one person dropped them from a height. We found that there wasnt much difference in the size of parachute and the air resistance. We could improve on this experiment.
Year 5 2024 to 2025
WELCOME
Y5 Rivers Field Trip. We consolidated our learning about rivers. Some children said it was the best trip ever!
Local History. We learned about Worsley Delve and the Bridgewater Canal and its importance in Salford.
Art was drawing a rainforest. Have a look at the fantastic work and effort.
St Gilberts collected in their monies for the St Joseph Penny appeal organised by the the diocesan charity Caritas. We lined up all our coins in the playground.
Y5 and Y6 retelling of the Easter story - The Crucifixion and Resurrection. They all did brilliantly.
PE. The children have been learning about Athletics - field and track events such as running, the relay race, the shot put and triple jump.
Our Winners
Our Easter Egg Competition by Year 5. Thank you for all your efforts.
World Book Day 2025. A huge thank you to our Secret Reader, who read to Year 5.
FOOD TECHNOLOGY - Y5 children have been learning about Mexican foods. So we learned how to prepare and make cheesy black bean quesadillas and guacamole. We also had Mexican rice and tortillas chips. It was good to see how quick ,easy and nutritious these foods were too.
Bikeability - these children are confident cyclists now.
NSPCCA Number Day
We wore own clothes today and brought in a donation for the Charity NSPCCA. We also played times table games, Sudoku and word problems.
MATHS - learning how to use a protractor
We are focussing on Gymnastics in the Spring term: balance, push and pulls. We worked well in pairs.
Christmas Jumper Day
We have enjoyed reading “The Girl who Speaks Bear “ this term.
Y5 doing a Santa Dash
In PE we are doing dance and we are looking at an American choreographer called David Chance. We have looked at actions, dynamics and relationships/space.
Odd Sock Day
Money Day involved the class discussing work and money, how they feel about money etc. We had parents come into class to talk about their work: Dan the Firefighter, Adele the Nurse and Andrew the Business Nuclear Manager. All were very interesting. Thank you so much for your time.
Year 5 Showcase
Design Technology brief was to use the Viking runes letters to create a Norse cross stitching. The children worked . Well done Y5.
More Forces- water resistance investigation
Year 5 working hard at blowing the flute. Practise makes perfect. They were learning how to play notes A and B
Year 5 are learning Netball and how to communicate with each other. They are learning how to move into a space and how to play netball using the rules.
In Science we are looking at Forces- Friction, air and water resistance. We did a parachute investigation.
