St Gilbert's R.C.

Primary School

Inspired by St. Gilbert, as God's family, we are growing strong in love and faith, becoming the best we can be.

Year 2

In R.E. our current topic is ‘The Mass.’ We walked to Holy Cross Church to see the things that are used in the Mass. Father Martin showed us all the things he uses. We asked and answered lots of questions.

Music

In our music lessons we have been learning a song called ‘I wanna play in a band.’ We have explored using different instruments to perform the song.

We dressed up as book characters to celebrate World Book Day. Some of St.Patrick’s School came to read stories to us. We also had a ‘secret reader!’ It was Emily’s grandma!

PSHE

In PSHE we have been talking about ‘what makes a good friend.’

Our DT topic is ‘Cream Tea.’ As an English tradition, this links in with our geography topic of the UK. First we explored and tasted different types of scones, then we made some of our own.

We enjoyed telling our parents all about our learning.

We have been looking at the properties of 2D shapes. Making these shapes with paper straws helped us to remember the numbers of sides they have.

NSPCC Number Day

Congratulations!

Congratulations to these girls who practised well and won medals at the gymnastics competition.

Computing

Giving and following instructions using the Beebots.

Science: Looking for living things

Art: Weaving

Great concentration needed for working on our colour wheel looms.

Collective Worship

We gathered together to say ‘thank you’ to God for all the great things we have in our lives.

Our Christmas celebrations included ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ with a whole-school singalong in the hall and Christmas Party Day.

The children did an absolutely amazing job in their performance of ‘Prickly Hay.’

Santa Dash

We are learning new skills in gymnastics.

In D.T. we have designed our own model of The Eccles War Memorial using junk boxes. We have been learning about this Eccles landmark in geography.

Odd Socks Day

In Anti-Bullying Week we wore odd socks to show that we are all different and that is okay. We respect each other’s differences.

Recorder

We are learning to read music.

What a fabulous day we had for ‘Talk Money’ Day! We came to school dressed up as jobs we would like to do when we are older. We had a hairdresser, doctors, nurses, a vet, police men & women, pilots, palaeontologists, an archeologist, a zookeeper, footballers, an entertainer, a gymnast, artists, a mum, a chef,  bakers, a builder, a teacher and a soldier! We learned about where money comes from and how we spend it. We learned about things we ‘need’ or ‘want’ to spend our money on and how we can help people with our money. We also had a visit from Elliot’s dad who told us all about his very interesting job with Amazon.

Geography

Our geography topic is ‘Eccles.’ We looked at the map in KS2 to find our school and where we live.

Traffic Survey

We have been looking at the kinds of transport that are available in Eccles. We walked to New Lane to survey the traffic passing by. We saw cars, vans, motorbikes and a few lorries. We also saw two trains passing by on the bridge.

On the last day of the half-term, our parents and carers came into school to find out about everything we have been learning over the past seven weeks. We were proud to show them things we have done and we answered lots of questions.

We had a special drama session with the Little Angel Theatre Company as part of our partnership with the Lowry Theatre. We explored the story of Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book by Julia Donaldson. We re-created some of the characters in the book and had great fun.

We visited Staircase House Museum in Stockport. We dressed up to re-enact the events of The Great Fire of London. We learned more about this important event in history and had great fun!

In art, we have been sketching houses at the time of The Great Fire of London. Then we designed and made a clay tile of a Tudor house.

As part of our Caritas work in R.E. we have been talking about our community. We made cards for the new Nursery children, to welcome them to our school community.

Harvest Mass

With Year 1, we led the Harvest Mass. Father Martin said the Mass and some of us did the readings and bidding prayers. Everyone in school brought food donations which were given to Salford Foodbank. We thanked God that we all have enough food to eat.

P.E.

In P.E. we have been exploring jumping in different ways. In one of our lessons we learned how to do French skipping with an elastic.  It was tricky at first but we did well.

Science

In science we have been learning about animal needs for survival. One of our tasks was to think about different ways to group animals.

Computing

In computing we have been learning about I.T. around us. In this lesson we pretended to be shoppers and shop assistants. We scanned the items, matched up the barcode and wrote down the prices on a receipt.

Music: Recorder

What great fun we had at the KAPLA workshop. We learned about design, construction and teamwork. We worked on separate pieces then added them together very carefully to create an amazing castle.
