6 Powerful Women of the Bible

At St Gilbert’s RC Primary School, we celebrate the strength, courage and faith of six powerful women from the Bible, who inspire and guide our school community. These women are our House Leaders, with every child belonging to one of our six Houses. Throughout the year, children learn about the life and faith of their House Leader, discovering how her example can inspire them in their own lives. Through their stories, our children are encouraged to show Resilience, Faith, Compassion, Fullness of Life, Forgiveness and Courage, using the women of the Bible as role models for how we can live out our Gospel Values each and every day.

Our 6 Powerful women of the Bible are:

Miriam — Faith (Orange)

Miriam was Moses’ big sister. When Moses was a baby, their mother hid him in a basket on the river to keep him safe. Miriam watched over him from the riverbank, trusting that God would protect him.

When Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby, Miriam bravely stepped forward and helped find someone to care for him — their own mother. Later, when the Israelites escaped Egypt, Miriam led the people in singing and dancing to thank God.

Miriam shows faith — trusting God even when things feel scary.

Naomi — Resilience (Red)

Naomi’s life became very hard. She moved to a new country, and her husband and sons died. She felt sad and alone.

But Naomi kept going. She travelled back home and tried to rebuild her life. She guided Ruth with wisdom and love, helping her find safety and a future.

Naomi shows resilience — keeping going through sadness and difficulty, and finding hope again.

Rachel — Compassion (Green)

Rachel was kind and gentle. Jacob loved her, and she cared deeply for her family. She welcomed others, tended animals, and showed patience and love.

Rachel’s story is remembered for her compassion — her caring heart, her gentleness, and the way she loved her family.

Elizabeth — Forgiveness (Purple)

Elizabeth was an older woman who loved God. She and her husband Zechariah had wanted a baby for many years, and God promised they would have one — John the Baptist.

When Mary visited her, Elizabeth welcomed her with joy. She didn’t judge Mary or question her. She spoke blessing, kindness, and acceptance.

Elizabeth shows forgiveness through her gentle heart — choosing kindness over judgement, mercy over criticism, and welcome over worry.

Ruth — Fullness of Life (Blue)

Ruth’s life was difficult at first. Her husband died, and she chose to stay with Naomi, even though Naomi had nothing. Ruth worked hard in the fields to gather food. She showed loyalty, love, and kindness.

God brought new joy into Ruth’s life. She married Boaz, became part of a new family, and her future became full of hope. She even became an ancestor of Jesus.

Ruth shows fullness of life — how love, kindness, and hope can make life full again.

Esther — Courage (Yellow)

Esther was a young Jewish woman who became queen. Her people were in danger because a man named Haman wanted to hurt them. Esther knew she had to speak to the king, but she was scared — queens weren’t allowed to go to the king unless he asked. If she went without being called, she could be punished.

But Esther chose courage. She went to the king, told him the truth, and saved her people. She showed that being brave can help others.
