At St. Gilbert's, we believe that art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity and provide children with opportunities to express themselves, explore their imagination and develop confidence in their own ideas. Through a wide range of artistic experiences, we aim to inspire and challenge our pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Our Art curriculum is taught through a cross-curricular approach, with learning often linked to the topics children are studying in other areas of the curriculum. This enables pupils to make meaningful connections across their learning and deepen their understanding through creative exploration.

At St. Gilbert's, we aim to ensure that all children:

Produce creative work by exploring their ideas and recording their experiences;
Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques;
Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design;
Know about great artists, craft makers and designers and understand the historical and cultural significance of their work.

As pupils progress through the school, they develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to think critically about art and design. Children learn that art reflects and shapes the world around us, helping us to understand different cultures, historical periods and perspectives. Through the study of significant artists, designers and craftspeople, pupils gain an appreciation of how creativity contributes to society and enriches our lives.

Art and RE

As a Catholic school, we recognise the important role that art plays in expressing faith, culture and spirituality. We regularly explore artwork through our Religious Education curriculum, studying religious paintings, sculptures, stained glass, icons and other forms of sacred art. These opportunities help children to deepen their understanding of Scripture, Catholic traditions and the lives of saints whilst developing their ability to interpret and discuss artistic meaning.

By examining how artists have represented key events from the Bible and Christian beliefs throughout history, children gain a richer appreciation of both artistic expression and their faith. This cross-curricular approach enhances learning and encourages pupils to reflect upon the beauty, symbolism and message within religious artwork.

Art and Our Catholic Ethos

Art makes a significant contribution to the Catholic life of St. Gilbert's. Through creative expression, children are encouraged to recognise and celebrate the beauty of God's creation and the unique gifts and talents that God has given each individual.

Our Art curriculum promotes the Gospel Values that underpin life at St. Gilbert's. Children develop resilience as they refine techniques, learn from mistakes and persevere to improve their work. They demonstrate courage by sharing their ideas, experimenting with new approaches and presenting their creativity with confidence. Through collaboration and respectful discussion, pupils develop respect, kindness and an appreciation of the talents and perspectives of others.

Art also supports our commitment to providing children with the opportunity to experience the fullness of life. Through engaging with art from different cultures, traditions and historical periods, pupils develop curiosity, wonder and a broader understanding of the world around them. They are encouraged to reflect, appreciate beauty and use their creativity to communicate ideas, emotions and beliefs.
