Modern Foreign Languages

At St Gilbert’s RC Primary our chosen modern foreign language is French. Every year group in Key Stage 2 has a half an hour French lesson each week (with Year 2 building up to this). During these lessons, children have the opportunity to develop their French language skills as well as learn about French culture and traditions.

We follow a teaching and learning scheme of work delivered by Madame Munum. Madame Munum delivers lessons which contain word, sentence and text-based teaching opportunities using a variety of methods such as games, songs and stories. As well as being great fun, all the resources have been carefully crafted to help improve pupils' vocabulary, reading, listening and comprehension skills.

Modern Foreign Languages and Our Catholic Ethos

At St Gilbert's RC Primary School, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) make a valuable contribution to our Catholic ethos and support the development of the whole child. Through learning another language and exploring different cultures, our children are encourage to live out our Gospel Values, celebrate diversity and recognise that we are all members of one global family. MFL provides many opportunities for our children to demonstrate and develop our key Gospel Values:

Forgiveness

Learning a new language involves making mistakes. Our pupils learn to accept errors as an important part of the learning process, forgive themselves, others and respond to correction with patience and positivity.

Resilience

Our children develop resilience by persevering with unfamiliar vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. Through regular practice and repetition, they learn that progress come through effort, determination and a willingness to keep trying.

Courage

MFL encourages our children to show courage by speaking in another language, performing in front of others and attempting unfamiliar words and phrases. Our pupils learn to take risks in their learning and approach new challenges with confidence.

Faith 

Learning about other languages and cultures helps our children appreciate the diversity of God's world. Our pupils are encouraged recognise the unique gifts of other, treat everyone with dignity and understand that faith calls us to build relationships across cultures and communities.

Compassion 

Our children develop compassion by listening patiently, supporting classmates and showing respect for people whose languages, traditions and experiences may differ from their own. They learn to communicate with kindness, empathy and understanding.

Fullness of Life

Our MFL curriculum supports the vision that every child should experience the fullness of life. Through engaging language learning and cultural exploration, our children develop confidence, curiosity, communication skills and a broader understanding of the world. By promoting respect, openness and a sense of global belonging, we help our pupils to flourish academically, socially, culturally and spiritually.
