Chris Lubbe
Mon 07 Oct 2019Today we welcomed Chris Lubbe to school, as part of Black History Month. Chris, once a bodyguard to Nelson Mandela, is a truly inspirational speaker. He talked about growing up in South Africa, apartheid and the civil rights movement. Chris presented this week’s 5Ws certificates to the children. In class the children looked at different aspects of black history and shared their work in the assembly at the end of the day. Chris’s message was one of reconciliation and forgiveness. Parents joined us at the end of the day to hear this important message. -

European Languages Day
Thu 26 Sep 2019Yesterday we celebrated ‘European Languages Day.’ The children represented many countries. (We did allow countries from further afield!) The outfits were very varied but all fabulous! Each class spent some time during the day learning words and phrases from other languages. One of our parent governors, Clare, came to share her language expertise with some of the classes. At break time the children enjoyed the French cafe and the day finished with an assembly by Year 5. Thank you to parents and carers for supporting this event. -
Special Awards Assembly
Fri 26 Jul 2019In our last assembly of the year, we awarded prizes and special trophies. Each class teacher awarded a prize to the ‘Worker of the Year.’ There were three ‘Peace Prizes’ awarded, one for each key stage. The governors’ awarded a trophy to a pupil who has really stood out to them and Mr. Finch awarded a trophy to ‘ Sports Personality of the Year.’ Two special awards remembered two special people; Paul Betts, a past pupil and Miss. Dermody, a well-loved teacher from a few years ago. The ‘Paul Betts’ award is for a pupil who has been a true ambassador for St. Gilbert’s, a role-model for their peers. The ‘Miss. Dermody’ award is presented to a pupil who has shown perseverance. The assembly was filled with emotion. It was a lovely end to the year.
